monitor features

How big a deal are the pixel to pixel and red color focus assists some of the high end camera monitors have?

Are they useful or just gimmicks?

I find them both pretty useful on my LH80. With a 1/3" camera the focus-in-red thing isn't all that helpful as most everything in the pictures gets a red outline of course. Using a 35mm adapter its fantastic though and very useful. Pixel to Pixel is handy for checking critical focus. I find having a waveform monitor to be the handiest feature in a monitor though. I could live without either focus assist although they would be missed. WFM would be hard to live without.

Yup,
The peaking feature (red focus assist) is a fantastic feature if you're shooting with any style camera or adapter that yields a shallow depth of field. A great test to see just how useful it is, is to get your focus, see all the red where you'd want it, then defocus just a little, and watch the red go away. Sounds simple, but if you turn the peaking filter on and off while doing so, you can see how it catches some things your eyes might not. Definitely the case with the 1 to 1 pixel filter. Check out this new Marshall 7" monitor that has all those feature, plus a few more that I've found to be very cool and useful in shooting.
