Monetizing Video w/ Clickables - interactive video technology

Pretty neat stuff. I bet this could develop into something big. Are they going to try to sell this tech to a big media or software company, or develop it some more and create an app for creating these types of links within a video?

Hi Nektonic,

Thanks for noticing! There are a few companies that are working on this interactive video technology, in hopes of creating non-intrusive, personalized, targeted advertising within video streams, among other uses. In this case, the ability to tag objects is built into an application. As a content creator, you can tag the objects yourself or use an automated system that is driven by face recognition and object tracking technology. I work for one of the companies involved, fyi. I just wanted to share this stuff because I know that being able to make money from video is a really important to many here and you can see where technology is going by looking at this CONCEPT demo. I've attached some screenshots of the video, too.

try it out yourself, what do you think?

Here are some features to check out:

+ Word Cloud: A running stream of object labels is displayed, with high-frequency objects shown in proportionately larger type. Selecting a word allows users to instantly connect to content of interest.

+ Video Search Box: Viewers can jump to objects or scenes in the video by entering object keywords. This functionality can open up libraries of video content for interactive search and scene navigation. Specific objects that match the search results have their position in the frame highlighted during playback in real time.

+ Object Ticker: Video Pane in the lower portion of the site dynamically alerts viewers to clickable items in the video by displaying the object label. Clicking anywhere in the Video Pane toggles the Contextual Results window. Viewers can quickly connect with related information by selecting the object name in the results window.

+ Contextual Results: Text, video, and photographic information offers viewers a rich, multimedia experience for learning more about objects or scenes within the video stream. This dynamic display leverages Ooyala's Interactive Video technology and 3rd party APIs.

+ Click Tips: Highlights outline the clickable objects in video.

I think this is pretty amazing stuff. I could see this kind of thing taking off, especially with video sharing sites like Youtube and Vimeo. It kinda reminds me of something I heard about clickable TV ads during the superbowl.

I think this kind of tech, along with the clickables you're working with is the future of advertising. The way we see commercials now will probably vanish in the not too distant future.

One thing that this stuff also reminds me of is AR, or augmented reality.

I also see this tech possibly becoming a big thing in the future once the hardware, software, and implementation strategies are figured out. For starters, just think of a more advanced iPhone or similar device that you carry around in your pocket and the ways that AR could be integrated with it.

Once micro processors and display technology become small enough, glasses will be able to display AR overlays over the real world, and will probably be online enabled. Stores and businesses will be able to have clickable or selectable ads that are displayed to potential customers passing by the front of the store.

I'm kind of surprised by the lack of comment on this thread. This is really interesting stuff, and the people who figure out how to leveage it first will be laughing all the way to the bank.

As a content creator, at this point I have absolutely no idea how I would leverage it, but you've given me a lot to think about. Thanks for sharing. This is facinating work.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I hope to offer up some thoughts on this this weekend..just kinda busy right now! Any other thoughts? don't be shy..I agree with Krestofre..wondering why no other comments? Are you guys confused about it? since it is a concept demo...should be a bit "out there" but you should still be able to "get it."

Hi Everyone..I know there is a lot of interest in finding ways to make money from video, so I'll update you with this article published tonight:

..impressed that they turned this article around so quickly! We did the interview with Media-dojo.com this morning?? haha. was that TODAY? ( I'm still at work 11:14 pm PDT-Oouch)

This is about Armani employing interactive video technology to monetize objects in the video stream. Below is a link to the implementation and an excerpt explaining the technology.

MD: Let’s define interactive video, what do you mean by it?
SK: Today, we see people more interested in interacting with specific components in a movie. Those components move through the video stream. They need to be tracked across a scene as you jump from shot to shot. So you might want to search a stream to find all the instances that show where the telephone is or another object because it’s been set up as a clue of some sort. Or you might want to jump in and out of a stream to only those scenes in which your favorite actor or actress is playing. Search is important but it’s not the ultimate focus for making video interactive. Our goal was to make a video clickable. We want to find the points in a video stream where people might want to interact with a piece of content. Perhaps they’re attracted to the particular hat Halle Berry is wearing in Swordfish. They want to find out about that hat and maybe where to buy it. So the trick to making video interactive is two fold. First you need to populate it with targets that people can click if they want or skip. Those targets need to be discoverable at the points where people are likely to want something extra in their content. Then you need to link those targets to something else, maybe the latest stats for a college hoops player during March Madness, or maybe an e-commerce link so you can find a jersey or something like that.
MD: ooyala was recently involved in helping Armani create an interactive online fashion show. What happened with that?
SK:We got connected to Armani through an Italian online design shop called Shadow. They had used our technology and APIs previously for work they’d done for an Italian professional soccer team. They’d heard about our push into interactive video. So when Shadow got the contract to build Armani’s online fashion show, they pitched the idea of making the video clickable and Armani went for it.

Basically, you choose whether you want to see the men or women’s line. As the models parade on the cat walk, you can mouse over their clothes to get a link to that look in the Armani catalog. It’s a pretty straight forward e-commerce implementation. The main point is that it’s entirely up to the user regarding when they want to engage closer to a transaction. No overlays or interstitials are involved. Just watch the video and when you see something you like, you take action.
