I took it to Victory Studios today to troubleshoot the wiring issue. The hard parts sticking out turned out to be some crimping and we decided to take two pairs of pliers and just bend the crimping downwards. The wires stayed intact and it actually worked pretty well with everything laying down low below the metal that was cutting them up.
So that problem looks solved.... I hope. As for the lens, I have to admit I was joking when I suggested cutting in the notch. Isn't there a good chance it would lead to instability in the lens?
But I'm still considering it... unfortunately I can't think of anyone with a tile saw, is it something I could do by hand with a hand file? Hmm, actually I know a glass artist, maybe he has something....
Ok, so I think I found a way to cut a notch in the glass (I shot at a glass blowing place a few months back, connections are nice), but then I realized that the lens might also have problems fitting in the mount due to the thickness and the distance in of the raised part of the lens.
So Richard, how thick is your 4 3/8" lens and how far in is that outer raised ridge?
wow, that's pretty specific. Best I can figure out the broken Mole lens I had is about 14/64" thick with the lip about 3/16" in. Looks like it gets a little less than 1/2" thick at the center.
I'm most concerned with the 1/8" to 3/16" on the lip right now. It looks like the 1/8" would most likely not fit in the ring, unless the overall diameter is slightly less as well. Is your lens a direct copy of the Arri one? Because I have a 650W arri and could pull out that lens to see if the lip is good.
This might just be a case of my taking one for the team in the end and giving it a shot, but it's probably worth it.
I think you could shave down your 3 lens holder pieces if necessary to accomodate the 1/16th of an inch. As far as I know its pretty much a replica of the Arri lens.
