Mole tweenie II vs. Arri 650

Right now I'm slowly building a lighting kit and as of the moment, it does not include any fresnels. I figured that 650 fresnel would be a good investment to start with. I've narrowed down my first fresnel purchase to one of these two and basically what I wanted to know if one has any advantage over the other. I've read that the arri tends to "hot spot" in two places within the beam when it is fully spotted. Is this true? I apologize in advance if this question has been covered in this forum before. Thanks!

Not enough for you to have to worry about. No lighting fixture makes a "perfect" beam of light. If the reflector is bent slightly which happens due to the nature of how they are made then the beam could be off but you just bend it back into shape. Price-wise, I would buy an Altman 650 over an Arri. Same design and construction quality but made in America and less expensive. Mole is great too. All of them are great, it's really personal taste.

Look into buying used also. You can get some great deals out there, some even on ebay.

That's a great idea. Good lighting equipment doesn't get thrown away, only scratched, dented and resold. I have plenty of units I bought used over the years.

I found a crusty old 50-60's era Mole Richardson senior in the attic of a theater. The glass was a bit yellowed, but we put a new globe in it for shits and giggles...it fired right up. Stunk like hell, but it worked fine.

Not to mention that they're really really simple to fix if there's anything wrong with them.

Re: Mole tweenie II vs. Arri 650

Last summer I won a Arri 1k that was in excellent condition on Ebay. Only paid $400 for it. The downside is that I have not used the light yet! Its all good, as I am building my kit slowly but surely.

Buy the Mole. It's better built than Arri and has better re-sale and every lighting house in the country will have bulbs and accessories for it.
Used Mole are very hard to find because nobody wants to let go of them.

Re: Mole tweenie II vs. Arri 650

You can find lots of used moles...but generally the higher wattage lights are the most common. Everyone has switched over to HMI for most of their +1k lighting, so it's really common to find old Mole Seniors for a couple hundred bucks. On occasion, you can find a few baby juniors or a couple of beat up betweenies.

Keep your eye on Ebay. I've seen everything from 2k zips to Inkies in pretty good shape.

Arri's are well built, but lighter weight. They will dent if dropped.

Moles are heavy, but also very well built. You can drop them and only break the glass.

Either would be great. If you have a kit for your car, then arris would be nice for lifting out of the trunk. Moles are great if you have a truck with shelves.

Arri's are pretty cool, but I think Mole is more durable. A few years backs, I picked up two 1K babies and 2K Junior with roller stand for $150 (no barndoors) at a used camera shop. I'd guess they were 30 years old, but still worked.

It's true that the arri's have a faulty beam when spotted in, and this can be a problem in certain instances. I have found it bothersome in the past. Between the two, I'd buy the Mole.
