Mole HMI

I've used 4k's inside, both tungsten and HMI. it all depends on what you need. Every light has its purpose, that just doesn't seem to register. Every light has its purpose. If you have need for 4K of light it's hard to make 2 2ks do the job. If you need it get it, but unless your building a 5 ton or bigger grip package, I'd think the money could be better spent.

Richard,
Ok here's another newb question for you. your 575W HMI's....do they work well outdoors? Can you use them as say a fill in direct sunlight?

Actually a great question. IMHO, no. I think you'll find you need silk overheads and 1.2K or larger to do that. A 4K would be very much at home in that kind of thing though.

I've used 575 outside on overcast days usually with an 1/8th or 1/4 ctb. Also used them for fill when shooting day for night.

Bigger units farther from the subject generally look nicer - but how would you power it? Most typical locations have edison outlets on 20amp breakers, so for indie shooters 2k is about the limit unless you're using a gennie or tie-in.

Also wear a face shield when messing with the lamp. They have some gnarly pressure in the envelope, especially if they haven't cooled completely.
