Modern Black & Whites

Anyone have any suggestions for modern black and white films? I'm shooting something coming up and hoping for something that would give us a bit of inspiration. I've searched around a little bit and I'm just hoping for something a bit more gritty than Frances Ha. Interested to hear your ideas. Thanks!

Probably not out yet in the States: "Oh Boy" - winner of German Academy Award "Lola" .... non-nostalgic - takes place in current Berlin.

There's also the classics - if you're looking for style, there's no reason to limit yourself to modern films. Movies like The Third Man and Bergman's early work basically defined black and white photography.

And I remember being told once that if you want to learn how to shoot B&W, don't look at movies, look at photography.

Think this is my favorite:

Hi all

are there any online tutorials on B&W toning in Premiere Pro ?

cheers

Look for tutorials using the 'channel mixer' video effect. Channel mixer allows one to 'mix' various amounts of R, G, and B into the final Monochrome result.

There are also some tutorials on using Channel Mixer to give 'looks' like B&W film. Desaturation and boost in contrast don't really 'mix' the colors, and so, in some sense is not as good a
match to B&W film stocks.
