Modelling a spitfire, I hope.

Back wheel is done. Modelled and textured.

Front wheel & assembly

The front wheel. Apparently fresh off of the assembly line.
The only photo real texture is the tire.

Everything was box modelled except the tire which was a torus and the cylinders.
The tire was UV unwrapped and Body Paint used to place the photo.

The cover has a few sharp corners but it's just sheet metal so I'm not worried
about perfect everything. I'd like to apply some dirt but I need to move on to
other parts of the plane. Hope to have all complete in a week (Apr 7), which probably means 2 weeks.

I just noticed the colors don't match the above part. That's an easy fix.

Holy cats! You even made the metal around the tires look "used", a little pitting and denting. Wow! Great realism.

Get that baby doing some strafing runs already! Guns blazing, Nazis running for their lives! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

sorry, got a little carried away.

Very impessive.

Haha. I don't think the model will be used for strafing runs, at least in the fest but there will be something in the combat area. If it does not get used in Spyfest maybe come June 1 some animator could take the model and make a good fighter-combat short with it. Ah heck, come June 1, maybe I'll do that too, ha.
I'm taking tonight off from modelling to , um, get reaquainted with my M8 (xbox live GR2 under the Raptor365 gamer tag if anyone would like to join in.) and my little friends from Royal Unibrew. Back hard at work next week. Also want to catch up on the other threads.
-Cheers.

/update. Still bombed from last night (pun). :) I'm thinking Messerschmhitt. Could do battle?
Could someone start on the model if your not pre-booked? We'll put them together. I've already done video tests with...oops.
That would be a blast to do over the summer.

(Tail wing is modelled. Working on texturing. Alot of details, more than I thought. Should post Monday)

Tail Wing.

Tail Wing.

Box model again. Originally cut off from the fusilage. The rivets or screws are just a bump map giving the illusion they're there. The flap is moveable and is shown tilted.

The tail rudder.

The tail rudder.

I've shown both the tail wing and the (moveable) rudder. The wing is all model. The rudder is all photo. That is the protrusions in the rudder are photo only and not modelled. I rotated to all views and it was 99% impossible to tell if it was modelled or an illusion.

I also dirtied up the wing for a closer match. The photo was dirtied a bit too.

Texturing.

Texturing.

Body Paint 3D was used for texturing. A couple minor things to do but this is pretty well it. Whew. Next week animations.

A couple quick renders.

Thanks folks and Happy Easter.

/The animations I'm starting next week are for the festival so posting those is forbidden until June 1.
Still shots are okay so I may do that. And if time permits I'll try to put together an animation that is
totally non related to the festival that I can post.

/update: After spending a few hours thinking of the scenes I need to do I had this image pop into my head. Captain Kirk on the giant screen as the Earth is coming to an end. He sais "We are going to attempt...time travel." lol. That's about how I fell right now.

Well due to someones birthday things are shut down for the day so I've been browsing around. Here's some things I've found so if your not doing anything (like me) it'll give you a break for a few minutes.

This I love. (also looks like Micheal Waltrip from Nascar)
Warning. There is swearing.

What some other people are doing. I honestly didn't know. Alot of stuff looks video-gamish but the modelling is right up there. Alot of the camera moves too.

your modelling is beautiful. i am a huge spitfire lover. my grandfather flew seafires (the spitfire off aircraft carriers) in WWII in the pacific theatre.

my guess is you have seen michael bay's pearl harbor. there are amazing spitfire in combat shots in that film, some are CG and others are real. some of the P40's in the pearl harbor bombing scenes are real too.

yes that was a hawker hurricane behind the spit in one of your pics, and that was a dakota (twin engine) in the other. dakota's were the transport planes for the US airborne.

can't wait to see some animation!

Hey thanks Janusz. I have not seen Micheal Bay's Pearl Harbour yet. (Links?).

The model still needs work as far as modellers go but it's also for video with a deadline and as you can see I wasted an awfull lot of time on splines. Never done this before.

My dad was Royal Scots WW2 (Britian in France) and then trained in Britian after as an aircraft apprentice. Spent the rest of his life working on aircraft for various airbases. Mainly for Fields Aviation. Worked on the Avro as well.

I love the stuff you other modellers have done and could use some tips.
(c4d sucks for motion blurring the props. May use max. BUT I saw a real life image with the same rendering I did. Still, it's ....???...suks)

Yeah the Hawker seems more popular in modern films.??? It IS bigger and the cockpit has room for a second actor/actress. Maybe that's why.

:)

Raptor that animation was very good, I liked the shadows as well. Matching CG plates with live plates is an artform in itself (not saying I can do it :) , but your skills are comming along good.

i think there are more hawkers around than spits, which is a shame because the spit is so beautiful! what did your dad fly?

could you post the link to your animations again? for some reason, i didn't see them in the previous posts and i'd love to watch it.

you can find pearl harbor at any video rental place. came out in 2001, made lots of money. its long, 3hrs +, is a love story and warfilm, NOT just the latter.

the battle of britain scenes with spits and 109's are amazing!

Hey Raptor. As mentioned keep it up! Great stuff.

Your Dad worked in the Avro program?? Totally cool. I'd venture to say even a lot of aircraft enthusiasts never heard of the Avro Arrow. That's one plane that DESERVED to make it to the big show but didn't. SOOOO ahead of it's time. That's what happens when the Government should just issue the checks and not get involved in the program.

There's a made for TV movie about the Arrow. You should try to find it if you haven't seen it already. Really shows the whole story. What a shame...

Cheers!

No no. That's what some OTHER people have done. Mine won't be until
at least another month. I'm only doing probably 30 seconds worth as the short is not totally about spitfires.
And with you people watching I'd better make it a GOOD 30 secs. :)

I've seen a couple documentaries on the Avro but it's been a few years.
I can still hear my dad's voice when he talked about the Avro program being shut down.
As with many people he thought they were crazy. Politics and money.

Sorry janusz.
That could be it.

My dad was an aircraft mechanic, not a pilot. (Did not make that clear before I know. My mistake) He began right after the war so he was sought after from various countries for his knowledge of the older aircraft. Locally he worked at Mountian View airport and later at 8 Wing Trenton. He was offered a test pilot job but said those guys are toooo crazy. :)

Raptor, are you in Belleville Ontario? I am in Toronto! That's amazing about your Dad working on/with Avro. Maybe he's knows thr truth about the myth: Is there one Arrow left in hiding?

Thanks

Good ol T.O. Yep I'm from Hellville..I mean Belleville ON.

My understanding is there's a couple test models (? or 1) that went down out in the water off of the east coast. But my memory could be playing with me. I know they've built a replica.
I think most everything was destroyed when they shut things down.

/update:
Just found this with a wiki search.

quote:
In order to mitigate risks, a massive testing program was started. By mid-1954, the first production drawings were issued and wind tunnel work began. In a related program, nine instrumented free-flight models were mounted on solid fuel Nike rocket boosters and launched over Lake Ontario while two additional models were launched from Wallops Island, USA, over the Atlantic Ocean. These models were for aerodynamic drag and stability testing, flown to a maximum speed of Mach 1.7+ before intentionally crashing into the water. Ongoing efforts have been made to search for the models in Lake Ontario, and, to date, two have reputedly been found, along with a Nike booster and a booster for a Velvet Glove.

/more:
RL-201 first flew on 25 March 1958 with Chief Development Test Pilot S/L Janusz Zurakowski at the controls.

-how about that.
