Model Shoot

So, I had the opportunity to shoot a model for the first time this past Saturday. Two models in fact! They were ultra cool and really fun to work with. There was a small group of local photographers that I met up with and we all shot together. Not sure I've ever seen so many photographers get along so well. Anyway, here are some shots that I took. Since this was the first time I've done a shoot like this I'm open to any comments or suggestions. Thanks!

I dig that full shot, the 3rd down. Cool vignette and the lighting is nice. I dig the strong pose. The face is a little dark there, but it has life for sure!

Thanks alveraz. I did use on camera flash for fill on that one to bring up the face as much as possible, but would have needed off camera flash for any more. Plus the sun was coming hard from the left which made it that much darker. I had the same thought as you though, but I like the over all composition a bunch so I left it in the mix.

The other cool thing about that shot was the model. I asked if she would mind standing on that old stinky carpet in a dumpster wearing stilettos, and she was like "Sure, that will look awesome!".

pest22o, if you click on the pick it links to my Flickr page. All of the info on each shot is posted. The only common factor in most is the body, Nikon D40.

Awesome shots. I just got my D40 and man I love it. Any tele lens suggestions, or for that fact any lens upgrade to the kit lens? Thanks.

Thanks guys.

Lake, lenses are kind of a personal thing. Plus it really depends on how much $$$ you want to spend (like any thing I guess) and the conditions you want the lens to perform in. Best suggestion, buy the best you can afford. Get the fastest glass you can so it will be versatile.

A real bargain that everyone seems to love, including me, is the AF 50mm f/1.8. You can pick it up for about $100. It's super fast and has really shallow DOF. On the D40 you have to manual focus, but it will still meter. I would say it is my go-to lens for 60% of what I shoot.

Somewhat counter to the advise I just gave you is the fact that 4 of the 7 pictures above were shot with an old manual focus and manual meter E Series Nikkor lens that I bought for $50. But it is pretty fast. f/3.5 through the 75-150 zoom range.

If I do as well with my first model I will be a happy camper...Number 3 I like the best!!
