.MOD files (MPEG-2)

I have a Panasonic SDR-S10 that outputs .MOD files (MPEG-2)
and would like to work on these clips in fcp. Do I have to
convert them first?
Thanks

Yep- nothing in FCP would work with that. If the camera comes with some sort of player converter that would be the first step. Otherwise search the net for a converter that works with MOD or ultimately you might have to dub to DV.

Noah, have been using ffmpegX for the convert, to .mov, but wasn't sure whether
the apparent loss in quality was due to me or the convert itself., eg audio & video don't seem to be in sync. Do you think it'd be better to convert to something other than .mov?
Thanks

It needs to be MOV eventually- but with those sorts of highly compressed formats it's not surprising you get lower quality and loss of sync. Even the cheapest $200 DV camera will give you much better image quality.
