I need to get new small and mid-size inventory outfitted with matteboxes. I don't care too much about price because these need to stand up to production. I find the decision has come down to these:
Arri MMB-1:
-2 Filters (One Rotates)
-1 Circ Pol Slot
-Various Step Rings and Accessories Available
-Arri Grade
-Works as Clamp on or 15mm LWS or 15/19 Studio
-Easily Removable 15mm LWS
*Lacks option for 3rd Filter Stage
*Lacks adjustable swing-away options (requires zwing-away or equivalent)
Redrock MB:
-2 Filters Standard (3+ Optional) All Rotate
-Good Swing-Away
-Beats others by $1000
-Supports Larger Filters (5.65" Square)
*Build Quality lacking vs Others
*Knobs for Swing Bracket are poor quality and lock up frequently
*Lacks Clamp-on option
*Very Large in size (Especially for HPX170 cameras)
*Lacks Mattes for Primes and various step ring/backing options
*Tightening Screws frequently lost in production
Chrosziel MB450:
-2 Filters Standard
-Relatively Good Build Quality
-Various Step Rings and backings available
-Works as a clamp on as well
*Lacks good swing away (other than zacuto options)
*Filter options are small (4x4 for one stage)
*Lacks 3rd stage
-Im leaning towards the MMB-1 for its quality and options. Are there any others out there within the $1500-2000 price range that offer 3 Stage, Swing Away, 4x5.65 (or 5.65 sq), plus proper accessories? Build quality is crucial. I'm sure Cavision or Petroff have something, but their quality does not stand up.
