MKH 60 and MKH 416

I was just wondering, if the MKH 60 was designed to replace the MKH 416 why didn't it? I mean typically when a company releases a new prodct it's an upgrade over what it's replacing. Did that just not end up being the case here or what?

the 416 is completely different sounding microphone , some people still prefer it to the 60 ( like me)
so they continue build this model and probably continue after they will replace the 60 with something else .

The 416 is "the" boom mic. for more then 40 years, This is when I first used it.

I still use a 25 years old 416. Cameras went from film to all kind of analog video formats to beta, DV, HD and good knows what will be the next generation and the 416 still rules.

PS.- Hi Oleg.

i bought my first used 416 from that guy ( look up for the name )

i sold it for the same sum after 13 years of usage

I just forked over the extra dough for the MKH60 because I like the richness of the sound. I've used both, and like both, for 13 years in the most adverse conditions possible. I think the 416 has more reach, but the 60 has more switchable features that allow you to record good sound in more situations.

the 416 is much narrow pattern and for my ears alwais sounded better , dont know if it just my preference or something real .( might be that the 60 died on me ones - dead capsul )
the 60 is much quieter microphone but for the real world situations its never was an issue at all and even in veru low convesations i never had any problem to pull it with 416 .

except the low cut filter on 60 that i used when found my self without the blimp i almost never touched the others , -10 db which just increase self noise if you work with normal levels and not recording jet plains and the high fq emphasis to compensate over the blimp .
eventually i sold it and got better microphone

He's gonna' say the CS3e... most guys who look for something better then the 60 end up with a Sanken.

I've listened to both and I like the sound of the 60 better... but the pattern of the CS3e is superior... so for a TOOL it's probably the better mic... to my ears the Senn 60 sounds really sweet... nothing like usual shotguns. The bass cut switch is the main reason I'd get a 60 over a 416... but the 416 absolutely RULES in the handling noise department. Personally I don't think there's a mic with less chance of handling noise with anywhere near that level of sensitivity. You can handhold it and get good sound w/o handling noise... but when there's a bass problem you're stuck.

I was actually being a bit sarcastic in my answer...I'd probably get the CS3e too, though with my experience over the weekend, I have to say that the handling noise, or lack thereof with the 416 is amazing. I forgot to include it in my post about my experience over the weekend (I will add this there too) but it turns out the 416 was sliding around a bit in my blimp (not sure if my k-tek suspenders are a bit stretched out after having an 897 and a 4073a hanging in them for so long). Not once did I hear any noise as a result of this (and I didn't even realize it until I got home, took the windsock off and saw tha the mic was sitting all the way back in the blimp, not mid-way, like it was when I put it in.) This says a lot to me about the lack of handling noise found in the 416.

Does anyone know if the k-tek suspenders come in different sizes?

i think you can find much cheaper dildos then the schoeps even it has flash light attached :-)
sexy microphone - geeee

Sorry Oleg, very much American English slang.

Don't sugar coat it = tell it like it is / or / be honest with us

A bit of teasing, because you are always straight forward in your answers and I don't think you ever "sugar coat it".

Your post before mine, comparing the CMIT to a dildo with a flashlight made me laugh so hard I almost fell out of my chair. I'm not sure I have ever seen that comparison before.

And just to add, a big wink: ;-)

iam quit proud that i , matt , you , wabit and few others who really work as production soundmans ( matt even as not professional soundman gave this forum much more then a couple assholes who put it under their name) gave people opportunity to open their heads a little bit and take them out from the darkness of knowing nothing or from the darkness of their sellers who sell them bad products , quit proud that people are really changing their mind and attitude to the sound , quit proud that people see the benefit of getting good equip
but

i just starting get filling that board becomes something like garage shop where people take fiat 500 and put in Ferrari engine , then they complain they dont get the Ferrari and they stay without money for the gasoline .
every second fellow starting to be the expert of what is the best mic when actually never worked in situation the mic is good for .
i can say it loud and clear , the chance your movie drastically will improved and get "hollywood sound " is the chance i will get a visa to Iran .
people dont get ,that mostly the skills, talent , huge production afford and allot of money that what really make the films sounds as they sounds and not some schoeps stokt directly to dvx.
now, every idiot can go and waist his money on schoeps or sanken to improve his self image since the chance he will improve the sound is a chance of usa team will take the world series football cup ( not that isoteric game that you call football :-))

BINGO!!

That is EXACTLY my point of the thread where I mentioned the AT835b can also be an "okay" choice, especially for the person starting out.
The microphone is [are] only ONE STEP in the audio gathering stage.

Matt, ptalsky, timapter, exile, wabbit, the yankee, etc. etc. have all beaten that point to death already, yet the MIC seems to be the ONE and only piece of equipment that everyone else ends up focusing on?
What? A Schoeps mic going directly to the input of a DVX with a $5, 30ft cable bought off eBay? <cough, cough>!
If the mic is of such high standard as a CMIT5U or CS-3e, there better be QUALITY EQUIPMENT in the rest of the chain as well, and experience to handle such equipment. Otherwise it's simply wasted money.
For many "productions" that beginner film/video enthusiasts make in their first year, $5000+ sound equipment seems completely out of place, and will hardly add to the quality of the end result.
We are lucky in that we can already buy very good QUALITY audio equipment for relatively low cost. Costs of this equipment has really come down a LOT in the last 10, 20 years (or probably more accurately: the QUALITY has really improved).
Of course, there's nothing wrong with striving for the best, and it has been said MANY times before: audio/sound is 50% and more of the experience; but like exile mentioned, the mic is NOT the sole reason for good audio; not by a long shot!

Who the hell said...

Hey.
Not sure who you are referring to, but my post (and I think Exile's too) wasn't directed at you at all; it was a general statement; and obviously one you agree with, judging by the equipment you listed.

Cheers.

Who the hell said I'm hooking a Schoeps directly into the camera?

Here's my setup:

Schoeps CMIT
Schoeps CMC641
Wind Protection and shock mounts for both
Cannare Star Quad cables
Sound Devices 702
Sound Devices 302
Sony 7506 headphones

Now I don't know about you, but that's a pretty damn nice piece of kit. Now if you think the Schoeps is an overpriced mic, fine, that's your OPINION. I've listened to every sound test I can find and I prefer it's sound over both the 416 and the CS3e. If I have the money, and I like the sound and I'm passionate about doing this, who the hell are you to mock and belittle me for it? What's more, why should I buy garbage equipment until I get better when I can buy great equipment now and get better with it over time? On top of that, I'm not exactly brand new to this stuff. Yes, I'm 23, but I've been making films since I was 13 and I've won film festivals with my work.

i dont give as **** what you are hooking it to or how long you make a home movies , my comment was general but you are quit good example for arrogant child that have few bucks to spread around . since you still young it wouldn't be a problem for you to learn something else.
by why the f.. i car, as you sad its your money:-)

Yeah it wasn't directed at you so I apologize if it was taken that way. I just don't take too kindly to Exile insinuating that anyone who would buy a Schoeps CMIT is an idiot trying to improve his self image. I mean they're just mics.

I think Exile makes a good point in that the majority of users who are not doing Hollywood calliber gigs have no need for a Schoeps when there are lower priced alternatives. The problem is that when people come in with no experience and immediately try to load up with the top of the line thing, they assume they know a lot about audio.

In this channel you will find people with all degrees of experience and kit lists. For those of us who have been around a while we see a lot of people popping in who decide that they want to build the ultimate audio kit ever and go out and buy the most expensive gear and their stuff still sounds like ass. Why?

They have no experience. There is a reason why some of us have built our kits and experience in a certain order.

All I'm saying is that I understand and agree with Exile's comments.
