2 scenarios , your mike preamp is on -60 db and you overload the preams
the secend -the band is to lowd and you distort on -50, add apad between the mike and the camer a,-15 db is would give you allot of headroom
the other thing - dont use shotguns to record live sound , the cardioid or hiper cardioid would give much better resolts
the camera mike is a a deaf **** , not only it not distort , it even pass on few hertz in the musik spectrum
