Mixpre Limiter Help

So, I have a Mixpre and have toyed with the built in limiters. What are good settings for the screws and how will I know wat db setting I am at?.. I have checked the manual but I am still lost....

As I recall, the only user adj on the MixPre's limiter is 'Threshold'..(aside from in/out and chained) It depends on some variables i.e.; how hot does the operator usually mix, source material and personal preference. I typically set the SD limiter's threshold to +17dBu, which is around three decibels below the mixer's theoretical clipping level. This assumes the system is calibrated @ 0dBu = -20dBFS.

I tried various settings and honestly I was probably as confused as you are. I ended up setting them at their max and that has worked fine.

It probably depends on how you use the meters. Setting them at max means they are being hit at a point off the scale. It works for me. My recorder is set to about 1/3+ and tone from the mix pre is at -20dBfs on the recorder. At those settings the recorder is clip proof with the limiters.

And that is why I am confused. The settings are set via screw but I have no idea what setting is what. I guess all the way to the right is max?

Actually I think its all the way counter clockwise.

I think the concept is that if you had some specific way you work you could take the time and calibrate them to your work flow. They aren't adjustments you change on any regular basis. I played around with setting them at different places and ended up at the max setting. Maybe I should be saying minimum setting? It's the place where the limiters kick in the least. I'm not using them as an effect, just as a safety net.
