Mixing software?

I apoloogize if this question is way off the mark. Is it possible instead of renting a mixing board, that there is computer software available that in essence does the same thing when using a shotgun mic. Reason I ask is if I'm shooting outside and I need a sound guy it could get tricky with power for the equipment. Appreciate any help

Re: Mixing software?

Do you mean a cart style mixing board for mixing and EQ or an ENG style channel mixer (which you can run off 9v or AA battery power)?

Unless your doing live audio you probably just need a simple channel mixer.

Re: Mixing software?

Having a Laptop and some mix software is just a bit much. It's cheaper and more resonable to use an simple channel mixer. You can find affordable mixers anywhere, ebay, musicansfriend, or a local thung. I was kidding about the ebay part. Most of the times I just plug my mic directly into the camera and post the audio. Some may dissagree with me on this one. If I mest up, I just ADR. ;D

Re: Mixing software?

Power problems? How are you going to power the computer, then?

A lot of the mixing boards come with battery power, too.

But if you're really set on doing it...there are multi-channel interfaces for computers (hardware) and mixing programs (software).

If, for instance, you went to http://www.musiciansfriend.com and looked under Recording | Computer Hardware you'll find quite a few.

I have a laptop with multiple batteries. That's good to know that some are battery driven. Appreciate the help.

If not battery-driven, they'll have adapters to run off of some DC source or another.

Re: Mixing software?

Behringer makes a mixer that runs on 2 9V batteries (3 if you want phantom power). I've used it with batteries and it works pretty well. But, I heard today that Behringer is discountinuing this model so you should check it out quick. B&H carries it (don't remember the model number off hand).
