mixing render and non render files

Would it be ok to render an already renderd file? I want to put some sort of mask on top of my movie for a scene selction menu and its much easier to handle the already renderd version of the movie insted of a bunch of clips. Would it look alright or should i bit the bullet and do it the long way? Thanks
