Mixing mics - H4N onboard and shotgun

So I just purchased an H4N, it's in the mail. I plan to use at as a general recorder for a variety of scenarios including:

Wedding and event videos: using rented wireless lavs
Foley:
Dialog recoding for indie film:
General audio note taking:

My questions are in regards to foley and film dialog.

I own an audio technica 835b short shotgun I bought about ten years ago. Great mic. I've been reading recently that some people are using different mics inside and outside. For instance using a shotgun mic outside where noise needs to be isolated and using a different kind of mic for indoor dialog recording. I never heard of this before, I've always just used the shotgun both indoors and out and gotten decent results. But I'm curious about mixing mics and using the H4N onboard XY indoors with the H4N mounted on a boom pole and using the shotgun outdoors.

Would they mix well? Would this be advisable or not?

As for foley work I had planned to once again use the shotgun mic, however would I be better off with the xy mics on the H4N?
