Mixing Kino flo diffused with bleach muslin with other non florescent lights?

Hello group:

So I shoot with the SONY F35 which is native 400 ISO. I discovered I love how the image looks when lit by a 4x4 kino flo diffused with un bleached muslin. Unfortunately once you put on muslin it cuts two stops of light from the unit and its throw is limited when you can't pump up the ISO anymore then it already is. So my question is in regards to this lighting method, what can I do to augment this type of lighting to get the same look? A friend of mine has an IMAGE 80 KINO that has 8 bulbs in it that i can try. Is the answer to use more lights? Or can I get a punchier light such as a 2k and augment the kino by bouncing the light of a sheet of muslin material?

What other diffusion/bounce have you tried? Have you tried bouncing the 4x into the muslin? Muslin is used far more often as bounce than diffusion, for the reason you mentioned (very thick as a diffusion).

You can hang something like a 6x6 unbleached muslin from a single frame length then bounce the kino into that. This would be a cheap, portable set up.

On working sets, it's more of a real estate issue that dictates choices to bounce or diffuse, rather than either technique creating vastly different looks. Do you have more space behind the light modifier or in front of it? Is keeping a clean set important?

You're also getting a colour shift with the unbleached muslin, so that may be contributing to why you find that set up appealing. Bi-colour units or manual bi-colour units i.e. human with gel may be the way to go. You can also play with mixed bulbs in your kino set up e.g. a single tungsten, the rest daylight.
