Mixing frame rates?

Hi, so I've searched but cant find a definitive answer on the subject. Say I shoot 24p and 60p and add them to the same timeline. Many people say to slow the 60p video 40% to match the 24p. Why must the rates match? What if I want to slow the 60p footage more or less that 24fps?

Thanks.

You can set the 60p speed to anything you want. You'll just get the best, smoothest results at 40%. Keep in mind, though, that you're doing this on a 24p timeline.

If you don't want to slow the 60p at all, and you want it to keep "live" look, then edit and render as 60p. The 24p will still look like 24p.

Thank you!

One question, what's the point of putting it all on a 24p timeline if both rates will look the same on a 60p timeline? (If I'm understanding correctly)

If you want the slomo, you want the 24p timeline. This is because you didn't shoot the 60p intending for it to look like 60p; you did it for slomo playback as 24p.
