Mixing footage.  XL1 and the DVX.

Sup guys. Great forum. :)

I was wondering. I'm going to be shooting a concert soon with definitely one DVX100A and possibly a XL1. Do you think this would be acceptable or will the images be too jarring to jump back and forth from?

Also, I was thinking of mixing the framerate at times between 24p and 30. Should I just stay in 30p or 30i with the DVX to keep it constant or mix it up.

Thanks beforehand.

Peace

I'd use the XL1 for Long Establishing Shots and the DVX for all of the Close ups if you are going to mix.

I'd say either stay 60i on both cameras, or put the XL1 in frame mode and the DVX in 30P. Don't try mixing frame rates unless you specifically want the footage to look very different (which may be exactly what you want too).

I'd also use one for far shots and one for close shots, so you aren't trying to match the same angle, field of view, and frame rate between two very different cameras.

Thanks for the tips guys. ;D

Excuse my ignorance but the XL1 shoots in 60i? I thought it was 30i and a fake 16x9 30p mode.

Peace

The XL1 shoots in 60i, as all NTSC cameras do. It also has "frame mode" which mimics the look of 30P, but isn't true progressive scan, and suffers a loss of resolution when shooting in frame mode.

THERE IS A WAY to have your final result in glorious 24P using the DVX100 and XL1 together, as I own both and intercut them often. What you need to get is DVFilm's newest copy of DVFilmmaker, which can now process any 60i footage to either 24P Standard
(3:2 pulldown) or 24P Advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown. So what you would do is shoot with the DVX100 on 24Pa, and then shoot with the XL1 set on 60i (or "movie" mode - BE SURE IT'S NOT SET ON "frame" mode). Afterwards you can then process your XL1 footage through DVFilmmaker, and I've got to tell you, it's a pretty darn good match. Best of all, the software is only $100. ;D

I've used this DV Filmaker software too, and I was amazed at how good the footage looked for a $100 software program. You have to shoot on 60i though as the alogorithms are specifically programmed to convert 60i to a 24P look. Lots of parameters for control too. Good shooting!
