Mixing color temp

When shooting indoors with halogen lights and a window light (daytime) is showing - could one just white balance to a white object reflecting both indoor and outdoor lights to fix the different color temperatures?

Well, you could - simply in terms of getting an okay color temp on your subject, but if the window is showing, you're going to find a freakishly blue and washed out world beyond that glass (see example, which makes me terribly sad).

I would gel your key light at least with daylight balanced gel and work within that temperature.

Only if the WB object is at the point they mix (and how can you measure that easily?)

But the biggest problem will be something that's sittingthere being hit on one side by Daylight and the other by Tungsten.

One side will either be too orange, or too blue, or the whole thing will be just wrong because you balanced for a mix which probably won't exist at that particular spot. (Even if the mix is at your Subject, what about the surrounding items...they'll be all weird.)

It is expensive, but I highly recommend getting a roll or CTO+.6ND gel, and just gelling your windows. First, it will knock down the outside so you can actually see what it out there (not blown out) and because the daylight it balanced to tungsten, your indoor practicals won't need to be messed with and you can use a lot less light in general (which = less heat).

In this example, the window is gelled and he is lit with only a 1k w/ a chimera and a little 200w pepper. If I was shooting through full CTB gelled lights, I would need at least double than and the window would have still been a little blown out.

Do you have a window showing in the frame and blowing out? What might help you is http://www.2nd-unit.tv/ which is pushed and worked on by Elvis. There is one episode where during the interview they strip everything down, including pulling the outside difussion and ND so you could see the difference. Hope you can find it usefull

EDIT-Oops, BennisHahn beat me to the info but you still might want to check out 2nd-unit for that vid and others. Great interviews there.
