Mixing bulbs in Kino's?

Hi guys,

i am just curious as to whether it is okay to mix DL and tungsten bulbs in kinos...?
Say if you wanted a slightly cooler temp' that you would get from 4 tungsten, you could have 3 tungsten and 1 DL without any issues...?

I havent had any hands on experience with these lights yet but i am renting a pair for a shoot tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Tom.

Also... does anyone have any idea of the different color temperatures that you get with the different bulb combos' ??

Thanks

Tom.

If you add 3200 to 5000 if warms it and add 5000 to 5000 t0 3200 cools it.... very simple.

Yeah i know that, i'm just wondering if anyone knows what actual temperatures we would be looking at if we added one, two or three tungsten bulbs to a DL kino for example.

If we start with 5000k... then added one 3200k tube, roughly what would the outputted temp' be...?

Thanks

Tom.

Hmmmm....good question. Next time I set up I will put a color meter on it and find out exactly the answer. It would be good to have a chart with this data.

My guess is it will be around 4500K which will be kind of a golden sunlight (without clouds) type of look.

We refer to it as Wonky. It is funny the different terminology in different areas. Now that would make an interesting thread. Like how baby plates are called pigeons on the East Coast (not to hi-jack this thread)

Just wondering...

...why not just use 1/2 or 1/4 CT? Seems a hell of a lot easier than screwing around with removing and replacing bulbs.

Maybe there's a good reason. Thought I'd ask.

Yep, if you could only have one color of lamp, I'd say go with daylight, because you can gel it down to tungsten. But as Michael points out, gels cut light, so you'll be giving up brightness to change the color.

Daylight tubes, with CTO gel to turn it tungsten, will lose about 2/3 of a stop.
Tungsten tubes, with CTB to gel it to daylight, will lose almost 2 stops of light.

So if you have to go with only one color, you should go with daylight, because it'll provide the most light when you need it (and when trying to match other daylight sources, you usually need the most output possible).

Honestly, my reason for it is because gelling kino's is such a pain in the butt. Especially if you want to put an egg crate on it. It's just much cleaner and easier.

Thats a remarkable difference in light loss! Good to know!
