Mixing audio

Can anyone explain something for, or to me? I am asking opions on another thread about doing audio for a wedding, through the church's sound system, or use the onboard mic & a wireless on the groom. I use the DVX100B camera, and a Sennheisser wireless. Someone told me to use the onboard mic channel one set to internal, and channel two for the wireless. My problem is that I don't want to pick up needless chatter or noise from the lapel mic until the vows are said. I know that you can put a volume envelope on an audio track, but how do I do the mixing? I took a clip ealier and tried to set an envelope (volume) for each channel seperately, but whatever I set for one channel, also applied to the other channel. Is that because when that clip was recorded, I didn't video with two different channels, and the camera was set as channel 1 & 2 interal mic?

Two immediate thoughts. One is that your two channels were recorded into a single stereo file. If that's the case, then insert another audio track, and drag a copy of the stereo file to that track. At this point you should have two identical stereo files, one in each of two separate tracks. Then right-click each stereo file and choose CHANNELS > RIGHT ONLY, and then choose the other file and right click and choose CHANNELS > LEFT ONLY. Or something like that. At that point you should have two independent tracks, each with their own mono file. THEN you can put volume envelopes on each one independent from the other.

My other thought was if you actually already have two mono files one each in a different track, that maybe you accidentally have BOTH tracks selected, so when you make edits to one track, you are inadvertently making the same change to the other selected track.

Good luck!
