Mixing action speeds

There was a commercial on tv for a sleep aid where a woman was going in slow motion while the rest of her family was moving at regular speed, but she was seeing them and reacting to them, like watching them pass her on the stairs. Can anyone tell me how this was done, in sorta plain-ish english?

Thanks...

Re: Mixing action speeds

just guessing...i always wondered if you could do this if you had the camera absolutely LOCKED DOWN and then shot the regular speed with the person who is at a different speed NOT in the shot.

then shot the same scene with the different speed person shot all by themselves and then you trim around the off-speed person and then overlay them on top of the layer with the regular speed people.

you could also green screen the off speed person, but that would probably be a LOT harder.

Re: Mixing action speeds

A few weeks ago I posted a similiar question about the GREEN DAY Music Video for the song AMERICAN IDIOT. The Director shot each band member against the green screen and at different frame rates then put them all together in post. He also used some sort of motion control set up. Look through the threads for the discussion or try to go to a site that plays music videos and look for the Green Day song. It may be on iTunes.com or Mtv.com

Found it:

And, they have behind the scenes footage. When you click on the "Full Length" link for the video the player window also includes links to other related videos (Artists Videos). Check out the "Slow Motion Effect" video for example. They mention filming 8fps and 60 fps.

Re: Mixing action speeds

Now I am shooting with the 100, how many frame rates are available with the 100A? Is it the same? I think I might be getting it confused with the shutter speeds.

The frame rates on the "A" are identical to that of the original 100.

Re: Mixing action speeds

Hey,
You can shoot at 60 fps ( 60i slowed down ), 30fps, 24fps, 15 fps (30p slowed to 50%) ans 12 fps (24p slowed to 50%).

We do this all the time with film. Shoot 4,6,8,12 fps & transfer realtime to 24p and Wam ! Cool look. I think the way to do the effect in the video is shoot at different frame rates with the timing worked out for that frame rate & use the difference matte in AE of Flame. Lock down is cheapest but Motion control is a cool look too.

hmmm....
