Mixing 24pa and VHS footage

Alright, I am sure this has been discussed in the past, so I apologize in advance. I am leaving for Africa in 6 days and am scrambling to arrange everything.

I am going to be shooting a documentary in 24pa (probably anamorphic, but not positive). My client wants to possibly incorperate some old footage from a VHS tape. Will this cause problems in FCP (besides the anamorphic piece)? Is it possible to import a 29.97 clip into a 24 fps timeline?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Mixing 24pa and VHS footage

The beauty of Final Cut in my experience is its ability to accept nearly anything. But if I understand you correctly, you will have 'existing' VHS footage (29.97) and want to incorporate your new 24p 16:9?

Although Panasonic suggests you capture at 23.98, I have yet to make it work without jumps. But using the 'DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown' (and if 16:9 check the Anamorphic option) it actually catpures in 29.97. Well, heck, 24p is actually 60i unless you're shooting with REAL 24p. Double check before you assume that one.

So, since my stuff shot with 24p is really 60i, a sequence set to 29.97 accepts either format as the nearly the same. If all else fails, you can feel safe that your only problems would be having to render the footage that is not set to the sequence settings.
