mixing 24p adv with 29.97 interlaced

I have footage recorded on the DVX in 24p adv. mode, and I also have footage recorded from a sony dcr-trv27 camera which is crappy 29.97 interlaced footage. Is there a "proper" or at least decent way to mix these two formats on one timeline?

I think if you put the 24pa compared that of 24pn on a 29.97 timeline it might not look right, or you could work in a 24p timeline but the 60i footage will look noticably dif. than that of your 24pa clips (resolution wise).

This question gets asked often -- you might find some good tips if you browse backwards. My understanding is that you have two options, and it kind of depends on what format you want to end up with.

If your ultimate output will be for NTSC - e.g. a regular DVD, or output back to mini-DV, etc., you are going to want to use a 60i timeline, because that's what you are outputing as. Your 29.97 footage will be at its full quality. Your 24PA footage might have some very slight loss of quality as compared to 24PN (because of the pull-down used in the advanced mode vs. the normal mode) but this is probably not something you would really even notice. You will still get the "look" of 24P because of how it was shot, even if you are playing it back as 60i with pulldown.

If you want to output your finished project as a 24P (i.e. "progressive") DVD, then use a 24p timeline. The optimal settings for your 60i footage are described in a Vegas white paper. I believe it basically recommends setting your event settings to "disable resampling" by right-clicking the event and going to the "switches" window. Also, in the "video" tab of your project settings, you want to choose either "blend fields" or "interpolate fields" as your interlacing method. One offers smoother rendering of clips with lots of motion, and one gives a crisper picture for shots without much motion. Unfortunately, I can't remember which is which. Anyone help me?

You can definitely use them on the same timeline, understanding that there will be a glaring difference between the look of the footage. You'd want to use a 60i timeline to do that.

Or, you could employ DVFilm Maker software to convert the 60i footage into a simulation of 24p, at which point you could edit on a 24p timeline... but obviously there will still be a significant difference between the look of the footage.

I definitely want to favor my 24p adv footage over the shady 29.97 crap. also I have more of it anyway. So I'm thinking, use a 24p project and edit all the dvx stuff first, then render uncompressed to a big avi, do the 2332 pulldown and stuff, then bring back into vegas under a 29.97 project and insert my crappy clips, rendering once again for my final NTSC dvd. I think this is what I'm gonna wind up doing then since there seems to be no easy way. not to worry, I have 4TB of space free for this project.
