Mixing 16:9 and 4:3 for a digital release...

I'm editing a feature documentary for a digital release. I now fave footage that's 16:9 to add to the 4:3. Can I edit the 16:9 in a seperate sequence, then output as a FCP movie and then add to the finished movie?

Or is it not possible to mix the two together at all under any circumstances. I know you can't edit the two in the same timeline, but I was wondering if I edited them seperately, and then combined the output FCP quicktime movies.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Damon

Hey Damon. I'm replying on a pc, my G4 with Final Cut is in a different city so I can't test this but...

If you take a 16x9 project and dump it onto a 4x3 timeline it automatically crops it to be 16x9 giving it the black bars. Same should go for clips, and as I recall each 16x9 clip would become cropped too.

So as far as I can see you should be able to edit both 16x9 and 4x3 together in a 4x3 timeline. (note you'll need to render each cropped 16x9 clip, but that shouldn't take much time).

Make sure the 16x9 clips are checked anamorphic in the browser window and it should work.(note, Final Cut should automatically crop them to fit into a 4x3 window, you will not need to add a widescreen matte to your 16x9 clips... but if you wish to have the whole movie resemble with the black bars, you can add widescreen mattes to your 4x3 clips to match the 16x9)

Good luck.

You can't edit 4:3 and 16:9 in the same timeline. If the time line is setup for 16:9, and you add 4:3, it stretches it to fit the same parameters.

Also, by adding those black bars, you are really cropping your image, which is not a good thing to do.
