mixers smixers...

so if you spring for a good mixer, does that mean you can get good audio without investing in a DAT? assuming all other elements are in place like mic etc.

You can improve the s/n ratio and distortion with a good mixer/preamp but not to the level that a better professional recorder will. Also the mixer does nothing for the frequency response of the audio recorded in camera which on the DVX is "meh"; ok for most dialog but harsh for music. For broadcast dialog, the DVX at line level is "good enough" if you must.

Cheers

Brian did you hear Tigeba's "dvx audio shootout"? If not go back a couple pages and give it a listen.

The DVX audio isn't crap, but it can get significantly better... in my opinion... and adding a mixer alone will only improve the cam's sound by a nominal percentage... maybe 10-15%? Using a recorder, even a cheap one like the M-Audio MicroTrack or Edirol R-1 will bring the SN and overall quality of the sound way up.

Tigeba's comparison clips were done using really high-end gear on the seperate pre-amp recorder clip... but even a cheap recorder should sound closer to that then it will to the next two clips.

I'll have a recorder and pre-amp by next wednesday... and then I'll post a comparison like Tigeba's.

The second that stuff gets here I'll need to know for myself anyway.

THe DVX audio is in my mind a 4 out of 10. A mixer does not make better audio. A mixer is like a file cabinet that allow you to better organize the audio. But it requires someone that is knowledgeable on audio. But plugging a mic into a camera requires that too.

that should be interesting martin, look forward to your results. how difficult is it to sync up the sound to the video track?
