Okay fellas, I have around $7,100 left and I need a Mixer/Solid state recorder. I can go with a cart or an ENG. What are my best options for that price range?

yup.

# of channels is the first and most important question.

and then sound cart only vs. sound cart and some "out of a bag" is a question whos answer will change the recommendation.

i have a sound devices 442 mixer and a 744t recorder.

i recently got the deva V and it is a great piece of gear but i wouldn't want to use it for anything except on a cart and it is quite a bit more complicated and there are an awful lot of places to screw up the settings.

depending on # of channels i would probably recommend the 442 with the 744t

you could save some money and get the 702 or 702t you need to be sure you won't either be wanting to have 4 distinct tracks to record to, and/or be sure you don't want to record a LOT of stuff at higher quality as the 702 and 702t are compact flash only, whereas the 722 and 744t have hard drives in addition to the compact flash.

i just spent a few minutes going through the pdf manual for the 702 and 702t to make sure it supported this feature before i mention it, while the 702 and 702t models don't have internal hard drives they do have a firewire port and when the next release of the firmware for the 7 series recorders comes out (reportedly anytime now) it will support plugging a firewire drive into that firewire port.

so that makes the 702 and 702t somewhat more attractive options because if you find yourself filling up 2 or 4 gig compact flash chips too rapidly you could add a firewire drive.
