Mixer Situation

Woa woa woa, do not attempt to connect your mixer into your camera. It won't work, there's impedence differences and the preamp in the camera is horrible anyways. If you invest in the mixer, it should come with audio recording software. Use it to your advantage! Now you'll be able to have a more pro sound. Make sure your mixer has preamps and that sound decent, and ofcourse it should have phantom power. Now you're also gonna have to learn how to record audio seperately from your cam and sync it. All you need is a cheap slate to keep track of each take visually and also make some forms that are specific on the audio. The forms should include: Date, sample rate (usually 44khz ),frame rate on the camera, scene and take, and always write little comments such as too much noise from a/c.Each time you record audio be very specific when naming the files on the pc and make sure you label them the same as the forms. Keep all the audio files in one main folder for that movie/event and have subfolders for each scene. When you record it is also wise to state the scene and take verbally.

As for equipment, if you can invest on something like a firepod or a true DIGITAL mixer then do that. Basically a digital mixer is any mixer with a connection via firewire or usb, just stay away from Beringher products. The firepod is more of an interface but it has killer preamps, interface is also a good option.

Oleg, a voice from the past! Welcome back.

P.S.T.

You have a few things off. There are digital mixers where there is a A/D converter and it stays in the digital domain from there on. I don't believe the Alesis is one of those. It's an analog mixer with an A/D converter after the analog section. Either way your not going to have "impedance" issues, you might have level issues but not with the DVX100. Recording software that "comes with the mixer" is probably not the best choice. If your going to record to the computer you should be using Boom Recorder (on a Mac - not sure what on a PC).

Also you would be going in the line ins on the DVX100 and so bypassing the pres. But the Pres on the DVX100 are also pretty decent.

And the sample rate you want is 48K, it is NOT 44.1K.

You have to careful posting in the audio section because there are a number of people here who have LOTS of experience. You will generally fair better if you avoid calling people names and stick to things you know or preface it with "in my experience". And be prepared to be corrected. And when you are learn from it. I've been in sound since before many posters were born and I get corrected from time to time. It's a continuing education.
