Mixed: Which Preset / Format

Never done a full finished project with mixed format HD + HDV or mixed destination- thats why I am the "Format Foreigner"... Format Freindly Folks! Can you help me?

We have:

1280x720, 30P (HD from the Panny HVX 200)

and

1440 x 1080, 30P (HDV from the Canon XHA1)

Please help determine what "Vegas Video Project Properties" are going to be the "best" for our -- mixed media + mixed destination project.

We want to edit the 2 source formats in the same time line...and have an HD Master that will go out to some sort of Mixed Format DVD (meaning we want the DVD to play HD if a user has it but also have an SD option for those who don't).

I'd recommend you stick with a 720p timeline, but Vegas has done some decent upconversions with dvx100 footage so you can go with the 1080p timeline if you REALLY think you need to.

I guess you are right because the other settings make the P2 look horrible (unless I did something wrong). Would be nice to have a bigger frame size but I guess image quality is most important.

What do you mean by "horrible"? You really shouldn't see much of a difference, if any at all, between the project settings.

I mean that i tried using a 1080ptimeline and played with the settings a bit in that general mode.

my testing reveal that a 720 timeline yielded better looking 720 P2 mixed with the larger format HDV.

I guess because no uprez is applied?

Of course, being a total HD/HDV newbie and barely starting to understand mixed format timelines and what would be considered 'best" practices... I could very well be missing something.

If it is possible to get crisp 720 P2 on and in the larger format timeline- please let me know how...

What settings did you play with? :) The templates are what they are because they're already optimized. If you go in and change things, you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

As for choosing which timeline to use with mixed footage, in general, I'd use timeline settings to match the majority of your footage. Or, match what your intended output is to be.

Then I'd match your Blu-ray output.

you mean this one?

1920x1080 59.94-i, 50-i 16:9 1920x1080 24-p, 23.976-p 16:9 1440x1080 59.94-i, 50-i 16:9 MPEG-4 AVC / SMPTE VC-1 only 1440x1080 24-p, 23.976-p 16:9 MPEG-4 AVC / SMPTE VC-1 only 1280x720 59.94-p, 50-p 16:9 1280x720 24-p, 23.976-p 16:9 720x480 59.94-i 4:3/16:9 720x576 50-i 4:3/16:9

Sorry, but if I set Vegas to: (1920x1080, 29.970 fps) the P2 look bad in the project view.

if i then render as m2t @ 29.970 fps, 1920x1082 and open in encore the P2 look pretty good but not as good as the HDV.

obvious Im missing not just something...but alot.

anyone have a link to even a generic "mixed format" to bluray workflow?

Well, if it looks OK in your final result, then it's probably OK, right?

But in what ways does it "look bad" in your preview? Personally, I don't see any difference in quality in the preview window when I put 720p on a 1080p timeline (both 1920x1080 and 1440x1080) from what I see on a 720p timeline -- and that's with previewing out to a 1080p screen.

which preset (s) are you using that lets you place the P2 720 on "a 1080p timeline (both 1920x1080 and 1440x1080)" and not notice difference between those and 1280x720 timeline.

On both the HDV 1080-24p and HD 1080-24p presets. But again, in what ways does it "look bad" in your preview? Can you post some screen shots showing the difference?

No, sorry; I was off the Internet for a while and I missed it.

I'm trying to see what looks bad in those pics -- what's the problem as you see it?

One thing I'd point out, though, is that you have the preview quality set to Preview mode, which is low-quality.
