Mixed Footage Formats and the HVX's 24PN

Hey all.

I shot a TV Pilot for a group of Cage Fighting promoters. We shot on my HVX in 720/24PN for the "Host" sections of the show.

Now, the cage fighter guys provided me with several other kinds of footage, from cheaply authored DVD's, to Mini DV, to VHS tapes. Once it was all said an done, I conformed all these formats to DV NTSC at 29.97.

I'm using Final Cut Studio 2 to put this all together for them. Earlier in the game, I noticed if I used a 24p timeline, my DV NTSC fight footage would be jumpy. I also noticed that if I made a 720/60p DVCPRO HD timeline, I could edit with the HVX 720/24PN footage, the NTSC DV footage, and my Graphics from After Effects, all without any frame rate or other problems (noticeable to my eye).

So now for the question part of this: When I export this to a Self contained quicktime, and then convert that to MPEG and AC3 files for DVD Studio Pro, is my frame rate going to have the correct pulldown? I like the look of 2:3 (or 3:2 pulldown, I get them confused), so thats what I want. But, will I be getting this, or some Final Cut induced weird frame rate?

Let me know if I need to supply any more info. Thanks all.

cmb, no one has responded to your question, so I will jump in... First, v 2 of FCP is a while ago, and the newer versions mix formats and frame rates pretty well without any manipulation... Assuming that you are unable to upgrade (older computer etc) I would look into something like Magic Bullet to conform all of your 60i material to 24p and then edit in a 24p timeline... Now this pre-supposes that MB will run with Final Cut 2 - if it won't then you need to get After Effects to do the job.

I've had Magic Bullet for a long time and use it regularly with After Effects v6 to do just what you've described (MB wasn't available originally for FCP, so I've gotten used to using AE)... although I'm not 100% happy with the 24p conversion, it's slightly better than the FCP 7 timeline conversion and intercuts well enough that no one else seems to notice the difference.. Hope this helps.
