Mitra Array microphone - anyone ever tried this?

The idea when recording a vocalist is to get the mic (usually not a shotgun) off the camera and about a foot or less a foot in front of her, not seated at a table. Actually even though she's off mic, the Senn sounds better to me.

'While shotgun mic resolves the directional issue but its distortion and coloration of sound makes it unsuitable for use anything other than recording dialogs
and interview'

That's the purpose of a good shotgun and it can be boom mounted.

Cheers.

This is a new one - I didn't think much of their stereo mic.

Several of their "againsts" for the gun mics did not seem right.

A ;ow frequency roll-off for a gun mic. is intentional as it is often used out of doors and the bass droop gets you what you want and minimises wind noise.

The recording sample with the K6/ME66 was in a situation taht would never be used in real life - in that situation you would use a proper vocal mic. and not a gun mic. at all.

I would not use a Mitra.

The quality of the demo gives one pause about the quality of the device. The other mic they sell, actually as far as I can tell it's the only one they actually sell now (this one didn't show up at any of their links) looks way under built for the price. Since they didn't actually compare polar patterns it's hard to say but their pattern didn't look very "shotgun like". And it looks a bit like it was built in a Radio Shack Project box. That is going to be a hard sell on a set.

But? Could be the next big thing. The emphasis on full bandwidth also bothers me. Most of those PC board elements you can pick up for $2 at electronics stores also claim 20-20,000, but most don't sound very good. The whole design makes me a bit uneasy, as in you have a big plastic box, isn't that going to resonate like hell at the right frequency?

I do think the prices are going to be comparable with the mics they compared against. The $1,000 someone quoted is I believe for their other mic. Neither B&H nor Amazon listed this mic.
