Missing something obvious with 5.1 Keys

I know I must be missing something obvious, but I can't get the FREAKIN' Surround Sound to pan using key frames.

I'll double click to add a key, move the pan to the left, then double click at the next appropriate frame to add a key, and move the pan to the far right. In my mind, it should now pan from left to right, giving the effect of something passing.

Won't do it. Just sits where ever I last moved it, period. What am I missing?

"Before adding individual keyframes you must turn on the panning keyframes for the track or bus track.
Select the track or bus track for which you want to automate panning.
from the insert menu, choose audio envelopes, and choose surround pan keyframs from the submenu, an additional row appears below the track with a single keyframe positioned at the beginning of the project."

**edit**wait I had trouble w/ this also trying to pan, click the star lookin thingy next to track f/x that says automation settings and select show automation controls now add ur key frames and it should now work.
