Mirrors (movie title) special effects?

Can anybody give me a clue how to do special effects with mirrors, like in the recent movie "Mirrors"? I would like to try a short (20 min) film where I would need to do some special effects centering around a mirror, like in the movie Mirrors (different plotline and premise of course), and also have a special effect where it appears the surface of the mirror stretches outward as if there is someone within the mirror 'dimension' pushing out on the mirror from within.

I am sure some green screening must be needed somehow. Also I found a site on the web where i could buy large sheets of thin rubber, which i imagine i could use somehow for the effect of someone pushing out on the mirror from within the mirror dimension.

Any ideas? I am trying to figure out if this is doable on a PC with After Effects, green screen, thin rubber membrane, etc?

You could use a green surface for the mirror, but then you would have to deal with lighting.
Generally a green screen requires different lighting than the scene does.
Plus you'll have green spill.

Another approach would be to use tracking.

The Apple Pro Training Book "Encyclopedia of Visual Effects" has a nice long tutorial
about screen replacement starting on page 421. It includes a hand pushing into the screen.
Although the example is given in Shake, you might be able to adapt the ideas to AE.
It's a cool book.
