Mirror trick help

My English is not so good, sorry in advance.

We're doing this film for Twilight fest, and there's one scene I'm not too sure how to pull out.

The actress is in the bathroom. She looks in the mirror, but inside the mirror is a different character. Actualy, it's she, but her clothes and make-up are different etc.

I want to have this in one shot. That means no cuts, on one side she's terrified, on the other she's a completly other person.

I thought to put a cam on tripod, shoot first version of her, then turn off the cam and LET IT BE until she change her clothes. Then again, she performs in front of mirror, and we film it.

Since it's a same shot (frame), I should be able to crop the edges, from shot 1 i take real world footage, from shot 2 I take mirror world footage, put them above each other on timeline and then it should look like a single shot.

Is there any other suggestions? This may work, but I'm not too sure.

If the actress and her image in the mirror don't overlap, it should work like you said, and it should be pretty easy to do. Just crop the frames accordingly in post and overlay them.

Sounds like it should work fine, especially if you're shooting over her shoulder in the 'real' world. You could also greenscreen the mirror and do it in post. I think that's what the other (thread) post meant.

Yeah just angle her so she doesn't cross the frame and so you have an area you can mask out. You can get away with her opening the mirror and closing it if she opens it from the bottom so her hand doesn't cover any of the mirror. This way it will look like she is when she opens it and then when she closes it she will have different clothes on. We did this in a music video and it worked like a charm.
