Mirror Break

I have a scene in an upcoming film that I need help with.. This scene is pretty graphic and requires that the male actor forcing the female out of the shower as he is attacking her. The end result is her being flung out of the shower and having her hit into the bathroom mirror somehow.. The general scene was for her head to hit the mirror breaking it. But have been thinking of her trying to catch herself and her hand hitting it..

Does anyone know how either this can be done with some sort of fake material or an effect that I can apply..

The end of this scene will have her picking a piece of the broken mirror and killing him with it.. But I am jsut not sure of how to get basicall ythe mirror broke in the first place with no injuries.

can anyone help?

Thanks
Terry

Tough call. First thing I would do is have a number of those mirrors ready.

Second thing I would do is look into a protective coating/sheet to put on the mirror to keep the glass from injuring your actress. But also keep in mind, mirrors don't just break. They take some force to shatter.

Thanks
I was looking around at some sites and saw that I can make a fake window for shattering.. it's made out of sugar... but.... how to get that mirror look on it....

Yeah, they also make break-away glass, but it's pricey.

Can she be covered by a shower curtain as she smashes into the mirror? That would let you replace her with a dummy for the quick 'impact' shot.

Or just show it side on, so we hear rather than see the smash, then cut quickly to a shot with the broken mirror in the background.

very good idea... we are going to do a few practice runs on this.. this scene is a turning point in the film and is very important.. I will give that a try...

What if the "mirror" was a green screen, and that was replaced later with a mirror shattering? If the screen is a cloth mounted on a frame, she could even bang her head into it. The trick would be to break the mirror in exactly the right place, covered over by her strike.

I wondered about greenscreen too, but then you'd have to fake reflections onto the fake mirror - it might work, but I suspect it would look unrealistic.

I was thinking about doin the breaking part from the side view.. and I can make that fake window glass... and have it break.. have to do a couple trial runs... see how it looks.. when i do ill post some video here of it...

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Alfonso's is a good source but very expensive. We got a box of broken glass from them (shards and small pieces, probably swept up off the shop floor). It cost almost 100 bucks for a 5 pound box, if I remember right.

I haven't tried this...but am going to now.
Get a piece of breakaway glass and have a mirror shop silver it.
