Hey guys,

Just wondered what everyone's opnions for a starter lens set are? Minolta was some of the best glass in the 70's and 80's, but Nikon seems to have taken that market. Thoughts?

Nikon. I have a 28-70mm and im waiting for my 50mm 1.8

Yes, minolta is good, but Nikon in my opinion is just that little bit more that minolta doesnt have :D

After the early 90's, Minolta AF lenses were considered second rate compared to Nikon and Canon. Though I own some Minolta "G" lenses that are outstanding.
Once Digital took over, Minolta fell behind in sales, and the rest as we know, is in the dust bin of history.
But Minolta AF lenses aren't relevent in this forum.

The older Minolta MC Rokkor and MD manual focus lenses from the 70's and 80's are about as good optically as Nikons, some are better, some worse depending on the particular focal length.

I think there's been other threads about this. If I can surmise:

MINOLTA MC/MD: Most are inexpensive, great optically, no future really on modern DSLRs except for Micro 4/3 but saving grace - they can be used on most 35mm adapters like Brevis/Letus/SG Blade/Redrock.

NIKON AI/AIS: Can be pricey, great optically, can be used on modern DSLRs Nikon, Canon EOS w/ adapter, RED, etc. and all 35mm adapters of course.

It's all supply and demand.

m42 old pentax lenses are pretty decent for a starter kit. And with adapters they work on just about anything.

Nikon but I have used some Minolta Rokkors (I think thats how its spelled) and they where really nice. The Pentax M42 Carl Zeiss lens are really nice too...
