miniDV tape reader?... do they exist?

i'm going to be shooting some footage, but i won't be streaming it to the computer or editing it. personally i would rather not have to lend (and trust) my DVX to the editor (he's a student), and would prefer another means of him reading the miniDV cassette into his computer.

are there any "readers" out there on the market? the photographic equivalent would be CF (compact-flash) card readers - you stick your CF card in, hook the card reader up to a USB port, and start streaming the data in. is there a similar device that reads miniDV tapes, and connects via usb or firewire? if so, where might i buy one (preferably locally) and how much do they usually cost?

There's always minidv decks... or if you wanted to go really cheap, buying a really cheap dv cam(for like 300$), and using that as a deck.

a common misconception (i had it too when i first got my dvx-100) was that the tapes could only be read by another dvx-100

if the student has just about any mini dv camera he can capture your tape no problem, or if you have any sort of less expensive/previous mini-dv camera you can let him use that.

in a way, its more important that he has an editing program that supports the 24 frame feature of the dvx 100.
