MiniDV Issue

I have logged about 20 hours of footage on Sony digital HD video cassette recorder with no problems. However, I just put in a MiniDV to log that I recorded last night and it appeared to be 60 minutes of black! However, when I pressed fastfoward or rewind, I can see the picture! As soon as I press play, it disappears.

I tried other tapes, and they all work fine. So it would seem this is a problem with the tape and not the Sony recorder.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Any suggestions of how I can get the image back? I have not tried to capture it yet, so maybe that's all I need to do, but I would like to be able to see it just to know it's there...

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Maybe you recorded the tape in LP mode and you're trying to play back in SP? Or vice versa? I would suggest trying to capture 30 seconds of the tape and see what happens, and also try playing the tape back in another camera or deck.

I have never heard of that before. Funky.

I think it might be that the cassette itself is dirty because it will show up in the camera playback, but pauses every second or so. Any idea how to clean a cassette?

It's not the SP/LP issue b/c I recorded another tape immediately after this one, same settings, and am having no problems playing it back.

Thanks!

If you are viewing this through FCP, check your sequence settings. If I have a sequence set up for SD, but I have HD files in the timeline I see the still when I pause, but black when I play on my external.
