Mini35+HVX

I got a shoot coming up with the HVX and Mini35. However to stay true to the style of the rest of the film everything has to be handheld. I hate operating the Mini35 handheld, its just not comfortable and I'm working with a director who is known for doing 20min takes. I'm also shooting this in the backcountry of whistler BC and its going to be extremely bright up there in the hills on a sunny day and I wont be able to operate off the little LCD on the camera because its going to be so bright out. Are there any good shoulder rest rigs for the HVX+Mini35 with a monitoring eyepiece of LCD?

Not sure; I mean, the mini35 with a proper lens is a big heavy piece of equipment as you well know. Have you thought of the DV MultiRig Pro? Would that work?

Also, I assume you've tried this but if you havent: the little Hoodman or Century LCD hoods do make a tremendous difference in the usability of the LCDs outdoors. If you haven't tried one, try it out -- it might be good enough, or it might not.

i just got done shooting a feature with the hvx/mini35 setup. by the time you add a mattebox, follow focus and all that, it's a beast. the dv multirig pro or any of the smaller shoulder rigs won't do it. i own a pag orbitor which is in that same league and no way it would do it.

on the shoot, we used a cinetech hip-cam for our handheld stuff. what's cool about this one is it attaches to your existing rods. so it comes in two parts. one goes on the front that has the grips and the connector for the shock absorber, and one for the back that has the shoulder part. the whole thing is pretty lightweight and well built. it's solid. everything is adjustable and it is made for heavier rigs so you won't bottom out on the shock rod. it comes with a nice heavy belt but if you plan on doing long runs with it, get some padding for the front. i would take the foam from the top of the mattebox case and put it between the belt and myself. getta save the boys ya know....

i also operated using the eyepeice when outdoors. the hip cam allows this....

the rig is stupidly overpriced to buy. $2600 comes to mind. however, indie rentals in l.a. has one for rent and i know they ship.

hope this helps....

christopher doyle uses a pillow strapped around his waist to put his elbows on...

it can be seen in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuWZI0yUUHU at 4:13

i absolutely love the idea and will try this the next shoot with the exact same setup, hvx200 and mini35. i love how he handles the camera by the mattebox, thus holding it right where it should be held, at the lens...

That is a funny rig. Do you think the footage right after (the film with michael caine) was shot with that makeshift rig? If so, that man is a master at handheld.

have you considered using Movietube instead of Mini35? Its much better for handheld shooting and you can use it with a Sony broadcast viewfinder.
