Mini35, follow focus, and mattebox???

Hey all... quick question. I'm budgeting for a new rig for some projects... and i'm wondering if these things will play nice together. The main issue I would see is whether the rods system would work across the board? I was looking at the mini35, cavision 4x4 bellows mattebox, and the chrosziel dv follow focus (with century optics ring)... any experience/insight into a rig like this??? Thanks!

Re: Mini35, follow focus, and mattebox???

If you are looking at the min35 I would more point you to the DVX100's big brother.. I dont really think the 35 is the most cost effective solution... however if your set, I have used everything together you have mentioned together, minus the mini35. the follow focus and century ring are actually very good together.

Re: Mini35, follow focus, and mattebox???

I would consider the SDX900, but 25k plus glass is way out of budget... The final product won't go to film, hd, etc... so i was thinking the mini35 with some lenses, follow focus, and mattebox would yield a pretty solid little setup for under half of the 900's pricetag, and give a pretty good result, taking into consideration it's only 1/3" CCD's, etc.

Re: Mini35, follow focus, and mattebox???

Hello guys,
this is my first post and well done for the creators of this forum.

Anyway, I am thinking of buying a dvx100. In fact, I almost ordered one. What stopped me was the announcement of the new camera which hasn't arrived here in the UK yet.

I was going to post a new thread regarding the mini35 adapter, but since there was already one, I'll just post my question here.

Has anyone tried this mini35 adapter?
If I do use it with the dvx100, could I forget about the anamorphic lenses adapter for the dvx100? I mean can I just use 35mm anamorphic lenses instead?

Could someone just explain the advantages of the mini35 adapter?

Does anyone here have experience with it?

Thanks in advance

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Mini35, follow focus, and mattebox???

Ask away.

Regarding anamorphics, if you use 35mm anamorphic lenses, you'll be recording a 2.66:1 image to your tape. There is no such thing as a 1.33:1 film anamorphic lens, only 2:1. So your image will not display properly on any television, it would take some MAJOR unsqueezing, to the point where you may be better off just shooting flat and cropping down. Of course, if you get the DVX100A, you could use the in-camera 16:9 squeeze mode too.

What are the advantages to the mini35? It looks exactly like film. Not just the DOF, but also the color & contrast from film lenses, plus there's a bit of a pro-mist-like halation and feel that gets added, plus the subtle pattern of the ground glass adds a film-like texture to the image. You can get shots with it that you could never get with any video camera.

What are the disadvantages? It's hellaciously expensive (to buy; rental is fairly reasonable). It's a little noisy, sounds almost exactly like an Eclair NPR. And it soaks up the light. Depending on what lenses you use and how fast they are, you may find yourself anywhere from 2 to 4 stops darker than you would without the mini35.
