No, not all brands are equal. Once you find something you're satisfied with, you NEED to stick with the same tapes. Most everyone on here will recommend the "PQ's" and "MQ's". VERY good tapes and won't break the bank. I personally use PQ's, and have yet to have any dropouts or other issues (knocks on wood). Anyways, buy in bulk from B&H and save some cash. Here's the quick links for you"

Use Panasonic MQ or PQ tapes ONLY and stick with it! I can speak from personal experience of why not to swap tapestock with the 100B. I had an out-of-town shoot a year ago with full crew and purchased Sony tape (after using Panasonic tapestock) for the shoot. I discovered after the first full day of shooting that I had recorded NOTHING after lunch...NOTHING. I had checked tape a few times in the morning and all seemed fine. Then in the afternoon, everything seemed fine...TC was running, tape was rolling and all indications were that I was recording...NOT! Client was not pleased, obviously. Thankfully, we still had another day of shooting (and was able to get Panasonic tapestock), but had to hustle big time to make up for what was not recorded the day before. STICK WITH PANANSONIC TAPE STOCK!

I think the emphasis is to just stay with ONE stock. I've only used Sony Premiums in my DVX from day one and have been very happy. At the same time beucause of how nervous ALL OF YOU have made me about this issue, I've used only Panasonic Masters in my HVX and have also been quite happy. Just stick with one type of tape and you'll be fine.
