mini dv tape

Hello .. I'm a first time poster, long time reader >>
I'm upgrading from my TRV-900 to a DVX100a. For post I use a DSR-20 Deck. I've only ever used SONY tapes with the TRV. Conventional wisdom seems to be that with the DVX I will be switching to DVM63MQ tapes .. the question is .. Is it advisable to go through a THOROUGH cleaning of the DSR-20 heads before I start using the MQ tapes.

I posted this in another thread but a JVC tape we were using in a DSR-25 snapped during rewind. Should I assume the lack of head cleaning was the reason? I just figured the deck was angry with us for not using DVCAM.

hey, you bring up a good point. I have a SONY TRV-19 and I was set to use that as my deck once I am ready to start capturing DVX footage (I just got the camera a few days ago). So, if I have only used SONY tapes, I should get a SONY head cleaner and do a solid clean before capturing? And, I should always make sure this is done before a DVX MQ tape touches the SONY heads (assuming I use SONY tapes in between)?

If I'm wrong here, I'm sure someone will correct me. As I see it, these cams and decks all seem to do better when we don't switch streams with them ( Tapes ) .. Give 'em the same tapes from day one and they are happier campers. I've never thought it's a good idea to go Head Tape Cleaner happy with my cams and decks... Does anyone have true insight on that ?? It's like... Clean the Heads--Pick a tape, and keep using that kind ...with periodic run thrus of the head cleaning tapes as needed ..
