Mini-DV deck?

I've been told not to use my DVX100B as a tape deck to play, rewind, fastforward, etc, for the capturing process to my computer as it will greatly shorten the lifespan of the camera's heads...

I browsed the net for awhile to 'price' mini-dv decks... to my dismay, they're all near $1000 dollars!!! Anyone else having this problem or did you find simple solutions!?

I'm using a little dv sony pc105 as a deck... I think you can find one for 300$ maybe less if it's used. And it have nothing to do with the quality.

;-)

get the cheapest mini DV panasonic camera with firewire you can find. DV53 I think is the cheapest. froogle.com or ebay.com

awesome idea! although, i shot a segment with a sony dvcam and took the mini dv to a low-scale cheap sony mini-dv camera and it wouldn't playback correctly. any idea if this would happen if i shot on the dvx100b and captured on the panasonic DV53?

Hey, yes it displays all the information you need. However I have tried this with a 1 chip canon zr45 mc and it has dropped frames every 5 minutes.... The battery is fully charged and all that... so i don't know what i'm doing wrong, i tried to post this question on here a few days ago but no one responded... how do I get my one chip to capture my 24p correctly with no dropped frames? I would greatly appreciate it, I have to import 25 tapes and I would rather know if it's possible now then after this project. Thanks guys.

If you recorded in DVCAM:
That would be because some/most cheap minidv cams won't be able to play DVCAM recorded footage (which runs faster than DV). Even some cheap Sony's will play it just fine though.

The DVX records in normal DV (not DVCAM) so this issue won't arise.

Vidled is right, most of the consumer cameras are not setup to run DVCAM. Older sony clamshell and vidoe walkman sytle decks can play back dvcam and by prerecording DVCAM bars and tone on a tape can be fooled into recording at that speed on assemble editing. If you are concerned about spending a $1000.00 on a deck maybe you hould consider a hard disk recorder and just use tape as a backup. Ihave a DVCAM deck but will soon go this route just to save time .

well I don't know if you guys knew this but I'll post it anyways,

1st I'd like to apologize for using his post to answer my question, but I was extremely frustrated with my project.

2nd "thekyleman" I have the same camera, and yes you shouldn't really use your main camera as a deck, because think of it, you shoot on the same play heads that you do to capture. So it basically doubles the amount of usage of your shooting hours. It's actually worse because you play stop rewind fastforward etc... so I as everyone else on this website would recommend to buy a small one chip camera. I just borrowed my neighbors sony handicam, and it works flawlessly, I can now import my 25 hours with someone elses heads = ) ( it's ok though he never uses it). Anyway for some reason my canon zr45 won't play the things i shoot on my dvx....

But yea you can find dv cameras on ebay for around 50-60 bucks... that will work just fine. I hope this helps, and if you already knew all this disregard it and I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Have a good one and good luck.

I was looking at ebay and all of the cheap $50-100 cameras didn't mention firewire capacity. Can you link or name a certain kind that is that cheap that would work.

that's not true at all, projX...

i use a sony ds11 with tape shot on my dvx all time...no problems at all. in fact the majority of ppl that have the dvx, use the dsr11, if they use a deck.

Yeh- if anything it's the type of tape one uses that makes the difference. (Some brands [Sony] use wet tape and some [Panny] use dry. Mixing the two on the same machine can supposedly muck up the mechanism)

My DVX and my DSR get along famously.
