Hi,

I have a question about using a different brand Deck to play my Panasonic tapes.

My question comes from knowing that using different tapes is bad for the video head of a camera. And that one should always stick to using one type of tape.

Now, would the same thing apply for decks and cameras?
Would my Panasonic tape be contaminated if i played it on a sony mini dv player???

probably a stupid question.

Re: Mini Dv Deck

I'm no expert on the subject, but it seems posible to 'cross contaminate' tapes this way as well as mess up the transports of the other decks and cameras. The chemical formulas of various tape brands may gunk up and make a kind of sticky glob that produce the clogged heads and drop-outs. If residue from brand a contacts the brand b tape you have the potential for a sticky spot. Why risk it? Panasonic makes a 'dry' type lubrication tape (MQ) that is said to both reduce head wear and extend drum life. They are not that much more expensive than 'wet' types.

If you _have_ to mix tape brands I'd recommend a brief - 5 seconds max- cleaning tape run after changing types/brands of tape and maybe beforehand if you're very concerned about gumming up a tape. Personally, I am fairly paranoid on this tape lube issue and still hear horror stories even though the issue is supposed to have been fixed some time ago.

That's my opinion, FWIW.

Thanks for the response :)

i shouldn't have any problems playing my panasonic tapes on a brand new Sony Deck???
The tapes should be alright to put back into the camera
without worry???

Different brand decks make no difference does it???

I guess I'm just extremely paranoid with all the talk of damaging your camera heads and all.

Re: Mini Dv Deck

Don't worry about using cross-brands when it comes to decks and cameras. My editors do it all the time. Just try to stick with one brand of tape.
