Mini Disc vs In-camera sound?

I plan to buy an Audio-technica mic for a feature, but I can't decide whether to record the audio in the camera or record it separately w/ a MD player.  Can I get good clear "movie-quality" dialogue from using the camera's sound recorder or is it worth it to spend the extra money?

Also which mic is better for professional sounding audio - audio-technica 897 or audio-technica 835b?

Re: Mini Disc vs In-camera sound?

hey,

I use both, when I can I use a shotgun for the sound, especialy if I'm doing scenes on my own, save's time in editing and the sound is good, if needed I have a couple mini disc's that I use this works great for lavalier' mics and shotguns, If I'm doing an event or an interview I use the lav with the mini disc. If you have a sound man for an indie the Mini Disc works great as a recorder with the shotgun. I remember in film school what a pain in the ass it was to haul around a nagra, then we used dat's, but I think that the sound is great off a mini disc. I don't know about the audio technica mic's I use a sgm-1x from Azden and have no problems. Later
