Re: Mini-35 Adapter

Arau, check these links out. These are the homemade adapters being develop for under $500.00. By no means are they superior to the P&S Teknik mini-35 "yet", but it might just make you think about spending 13 grand. I personally feel the mini-35 adapter is grossly over priced. If they threw in the rails, lens and follow focus, then it would warrant the price. There is suppose to be an affordable product called Movietube which is suppose to be released this summer. They claim to have images just as good, if not better, that the mini-35 adapter (we will just have to wait to see) at 1/10 the price. Anyway, check out what a little work can get you.

Re: Mini-35 Adapter

Hello guys, this has been a very interesting discussion. I have seen some amazing stuff in here.
Anyway, if the home made version gives me the same thing I want from the mini35, then i'll go for it, and i'll save some bucks. If not, I will really go for the mini35.

Now, I have another question. Barry I read something about using the anamorphic adapter with the mini35. How would you go about that? I know you said that the anamorphic adapter gives a softer image, so I suppose if you use it in conjunction with the mini35 it will give a much nicer image, isn't it?

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Mini-35 Adapter

The anamorphic adapter doesn't really give a softer image, it's just a little different, but not necessarily softer. The image from the mini35 is quite a bit softer. Using the anamorphic adapter might help if you're intending to make a 16:9 image, because the process could stand to benefit from the additional resolution the anamorphic adapter can provide.

It's tough though, because focusing with the mini35 is very tricky: you have to focus the cine lens, and also focus the DVX lens on the ground glass, so at any point you may have two focus adjustments to make. Add the anamorphic adapter (with its astigmatism) into the mix, and focusing could become very tricky indeed.

But to use it, just use some step-up rings to screw it into the filter threads on your cine/still-camera lens. That's what I was going to try. The question is, are your lenses internal-focus, and will the anamorphic still give the proper squeeze ratio if you're using step-up rings? It's something to try, but I never tried it so I have no experience to report.

Re: Mini-35 Adapter

So Barry, you said that the Mini35 was softer than the Anamorphic footage...would Mini35 be softer than regular, straight out of the naked camera DVX footage? I mean was it the boost in resolution that the anamorphic gives that made it sharper, was it the Mini35 softening the 4:3 image, or both?

Just for my general information... ;D

Re: Mini-35 Adapter

Mini35 footage is much softer than stock DVX footage. The act of the image being projected onto the ground glass softens it significantly. There is quite a difference between the two. But, the mini35 stuff, while not as "sharp", looks much more filmlike, probably for that very reason.
