You could also argue that alchohol is a stepping stone to pot and I've seen that a few times over.

Pot puts "YOU" in a bad place. I think one has to remember that ones personal experience is not always the same as others.

not a user myself, but may have a few life years experience on you on this one. do what you want, I think we all need to learn things for ourselves. Just don't operate any heavy machinery in the meantime ;>)

Yes, you could argue that and it would seem logical. But from a sociological standpoint it doesn't hold nearly as much water. For what ever hypocritical reasons, alcohol is widely viewed as socially acceptable. Much of how we deal with these things is as much psychological and sociological as it is medical and biological. I am speculating, but I would imagine that there are a higher percentage of adults who are social drinkers, and do no other drugs (not counting tobacco, which only muddies the water even more) than those that have used pot regularly and not used harder drugs.

You could make a very sound argument that pot is no worse from a neurological viewpoint than alcohol. But that doesn't account for the fact that pot is viewed differently, and our perceptions at both an individual and societal level effect our judgements. For most individuals it is a wider chasm to cross to go from alcohol to coke, than from pot to coke.

EDIT: No Cash, yes I have seen it. It is frightening how easily people are manipulated when fear is used as a factor. Even now, when some of the original reasons have been debunked, so much of the stigma remains.

I do not feel my son is incapable at all. In fact; if homelife, parental involvement and love and care is any factor then I should have no worries. What I specifically meant was "Kids are kids are kids." Kids get in with other kids, kids try things, kids experiment, kids are kids. I am sure the majority of us here have tried something and today stand on the moral that 'that was and is bad'. Don't feel shame; I am not naive about the reality of life and the roads presented to each of us and inevitably our children. If you think you can control and watch your kid forever you are gravely mistaken.

I hope to continue be involved in my sons life and to be there for him to educate and provide guidance; but whether it grammar school, high school or college; eventually he will find himself in situations I can only hope my guidance and wisdom pays off.

Don't feel shame brother; I think my son is more than capable; but rich, poor, black, white, cops sons, preachers sons, criminals sons, teachers sons have all gone down the wrong path for whatever reasons.

Shame? Tssshhh.

"What-eva..."

And one thing I do agree on and am seeing; are some in here that seem to take a 'judgemental' approach or stance.

I agree with vjbrennan on the point of "a simple solution to a complex problem" and Neil raised some valid points. This is a complex issue with many layers of questions and answers. This isn't a balck and white issue. And as far as being concerned with 'Freedom and Responsibilty'? It is touchy to me as I feel there are too many of the wrong types making the decisions for the rest of us; but that is another topic.

Again; I tried stuff; some more than once. Never an addict, never led me down the wrong road. Purely social and I made the decision "For me, this is wrong. For me, this is not the road to take." This alienated me from some dear friends fora time as I refused to be a part of that 'gang'. In time, most of them followed the same path as I did and stopped, grew up, became more responsible. A few however? To this day are still 'caught up' in it and thier lives are a mess. In these cases; I %100 blame their drug usage. More so, I blame them for not being able to handle it and lacking complete control.

Alcohol is as bad as anything; some can drink some Coronas at the weeknd BBQ while others spiral into addiction and discover alter-egos. I think it is the same way with Mary Jane. Some people cn handle it while others let it destroy them.

Gambling? I can do without it as i ahte 'blowing money' but others get caught up and let it ruin them.

Food? Some people can eat for substinance or not glutton while others are so fat and obese from literally being addictqed to the stuff.

Cigarettes? Jeez. I need to quit; I am an addict.

My point is; don't be so judgemental. It isn't an issue of This or That. There are many layers to the question and answer. But if you are so close minded you can't see it in that light; then you are scary type.

I quit smoking pot in the 70s for all intents and purpose, now I rarely puff at the odd gathering maybe twice a year...I just seemed to outgrow it. Too late for the heavy equipment warning:laugh:

It's tough being a parent...imagining that your kids might do half the things you did. Jeez, I'm lucky to be alive and a free man.

What a mind numbingly pathetic thread this is.

Move along children, you are discussing, and trying to justify, DRUG USE.

sorry about the assumptions Mino. just seen enough people I care about in enough pain while using pot. not the end of the world for some poeple in their early 20s (but there are much better ways to spend time), but heavy useage once you've hit the real world and job market, well I've NEVER seen that go well.

"...trying to justify, DRUG USE."

Not at all Pookie. Some are, some are not and some are acknowledging that is a very complicated question with no simple answer nor clear cut solution.

it just pushes my buttons when kids think it isn't affecting them. They'll learn at their own pace (I did too), but Gotta say something.

There is nothing I have seen that is quite as disturbing as watching the remains of a human being sniffing glue from a brown paper bag on a deserted Sunday morning sidewalk. If this were up for a legalization debate I'd snap!

Mino

That is one thing I NEVER tried! Ouch. Scary.

I saw a DOC once on this and I could not beleive my eyes. Literally BRAIN DEAD kids. Jeez.

Inhalents are just plaine stupid. I do admit to doing a whip it on several occasions and who hasnt sucked the helium out of a balloon? That can be fatal.

To indulge in any drug use and say it isn't affecting you is denial IMHO. I have seen many people over the years who barely get out of bed without sticking a joint in their yaps....But I remain silent without challenge as I slowly take a long draw on my first cigarette and sip that hot coffee. There is such a thing as pot addiction though it doesn't appear to be physical, and for all those who smoke it during every waking hour, there are a whole lot of social burnouts among them. It IS like the social drinker vs the alchoholic, our bodies and mind sets all treat drugs in different ways.
