Miller video heads

Has anyone had experience with the Miller heads, the DS5, 10, 20 in particular?

Your thoughts would be awesome

Hi,

I recently worked with a british DP who has his own Sony F900. He bought a Miller over the sachtleretherer equivilent. It was afew hundrd pounds cheaper, and its really very nice. Im not sure of the model number, but it happily supports a 20kg F900 cinema setup. Its very smooth, and hes very happy with it, and I was impressed.

Its got graphite/carbon legs, but dont let that fool you, this thing is really very heavy. Probably lighter than the others out there, but it is not easy to move if you have other cases and your on your own.

Nice setup though, id buy one.

I'm using the DS10 myself - beautiful fluid motion and sturdy as hell!

I can use it with my DVX on full zoom without any drift-back or jitters whatsoever

I've got a DS20 sitting on Solo DV CF legs. At first, I really liked it--I used it with a bare HVX. I could get relatively smooth movements, even though the camera was a little too light for the head (I come from a background of full-size rigs sitting on Sachtlers and Oconnors). But now--I love it. Once I added a Redrock M2 with all its accoutrements to my setup, suddenly, the DS20 came alive. It's now MUCH easier to get fluid movements with the extra weight.

If you plan on putting a fair amount of weight on your tripod, the DS20 is a good way to go. The DS10 might be a better bet if all you intend to use is a bare camera.

Thanks for the info guys. I like the idea of buying MIller because it is Australian made.

I can pick up the DS-5 pretty cheap, but do you think it would be ok for a Canon Xh-A1 with Ikan monitor?

Ok, been holding out for a Sachtler but this gets my attention.

The reason I am interested in the Millers is because I had always heard that they are some of the best tripods in the world but I always thought that they were out of my price range. I had decided to save for a decent sachtler, but this all changed when I saw the DS-10 in my local store and thought "damn this feels good". After hearing that it was under a grand I wanted to find out more

Skip the DS5 - It's really designed for a bare camera only - Once you start adding accessories , it'll be overloaded. If you really want to run with a Miller head, start at the DS10 :)

Well, you guys definitely got my attention on the DS10 so I just pulled the trigger. Was holding out for the DV6SB but can't afford it right now. If the head is as good as reported I'll be happy. At least with the Solo CF legs, I'll have an upgrade path for the Sachtler head in the future.

Miller makes great stuff. I own an Arrow 25 and unlike many manufacturers, Miller uses a real fluid resistance system.

Used the DS10 Solo CF on a recent event. Adjustment of the legs is not a quick as I would prefer but that may improve with time. Ran with it through woods and fields--no weight issues. Mounting plate lock lever could be easier to get to. Fluid motion is fantastic. So far, I think I made a good choice here. Thanks for everyone's input.
