Mighty Mouse

I just got one today. It is sweet. I love the horizontal scroll. I love the feel and sound of the scroll wheel too. It is great for scrolling around images in PhotoShop. I might have to get one for my other hand now.

Worth it? I got one, 'cause I've been wanting a horizontal scroll for a long time. But the mouse itself is not quite as comfortable as my old Logitech, and I find the "scroll ball" gives me much less precise control (vertically, anyway) than the old scroll wheel. So, if you aren't desperate like me for horizontal scrolling, you may want to wait for a response from logitech, or at lewast try the thing out in an Apple Store first.

I wish someone would post a close-up video of Steve Jobs using a mouse. After the hockey puck and this, I'm sure that there must be something in the way he holds a mouse that's fundamentally different from the way I (and apparently many others) use one, that makes his idea of what's comfortable different. 'Cause they do seem to really put a lot of effort into these things... and even announced the hockey-puck as the most comfortable mouse ever, even though the majority of people found it unusable....

Anyway, enough rant... the Mighty Mouse is not unusable, and I'm even pretty happy using it for now, Mainly, it takes a bit of getting used to. There are two main things I've discovered that help:

1) As they say, the mouse is touch sensitive... so it differentiates a left-click from a right-click by sensing whether a finger is in contact on either side. What this means is, if both fingers are lightly resting on the mouse, and you push with the right finger, you still get a left-click, and vice-versa. So you gotta make sure all fingers are off the mouse except the one that's clicking. Seems OK if your palm is resting on it.

2) The scroll ball needs downward pressure to scroll smoothly. My initial tendency was to only roll it lightly, since it also serves as a middle button when pushed; and response was jerky. But it's actually pretty unlikely (unlike on some scroll wheels I've used) to click by accident, and pressure while scrolling makes it respond much more cleanly and precisely.

So, I'm still testing and deciding if overall I like it or not... except when I need to scroll around, say, a timeline or a large image, when I absolutely love it. However, If Logiteck or someone made a similar device but with a "humpier" shape and real buttons, I'd probably buy that.

Ultimately, $49 isn't so bad to try it out... especially for the horizontal scrolling, which you'll appreciate in video editing.

I agree the vertical scroll takes some getting used to, but you can adjuct the speed in the pref panel, and that seems to help. But I agree. The horizontal scroll is nice. Not sure if anyone ever made a horizontal scroll mouse before. I love it for getting around big images in PhotoShop, and of course, scrolling horizontally on time lines. WTH. Its only 50 bucks.
